Launch of the £1million appeal

£1 million charity appeal to create better local hospitals for all

ELHT&Me, the official charity of East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT), last week launched an ambitious £1 Million Appeal and is encouraging local businesses, institutions and individuals to support it.

As the NHS celebrates its 70th birthday this year, the £1 Million Appeal is raising money for new equipment, improving facilities and enhancing the patient environment at ELHT’s two acute (Royal Blackburn and Burnley General) and three community hospitals (Accrington Victoria, Clitheroe and Pendle). All the people of Blackburn with Darwen and the rest of East Lancashire will benefit.

Denise Gee, Fundraising Manager for the charity said: “We want all of the 700,000 patients we treat each year to have an experience that not only meets their needs, but exceeds their expectations.

“Over the years, the people and businesses of East Lancashire have shown how much they value their local hospitals with countless examples of donations enabling improvements across the Trust.

“Now, by supporting our £1 Million Appeal, everyone in East Lancashire can help provide even better treatment, care and facilities that our patients deserve.”

In particular, the £1 Million Appeal will focus on improvements that are ‘over and above’ normal NHS provision - things such as specialised medical equipment and better patient facilities. For example, the Trust bought a surgical robot a couple of years ago to provide the most advanced type of surgery for some cancers. This type of surgery is more accurate, less invasive and easier to recover from, but needs £2,000 of charitable funding support for each operation performed.

Children’s Ward Matron Tina Webb, said: “Being a local resident and working at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, I am aware of the great work that is done by the hard working and caring staff on behalf of our patients.

Denise added: “Charitable funding helps us provide things that we couldn’t otherwise. I’d like us to be able to provide portable sensory equipment that can be taken to children’s bedsides, but it costs about £8,000’.

“There are lots of ways that individuals and companies can support the £1 Million Appeal.  They can hold their own fundraising event, do a sponsored event or activity, go to the ELHT&Me donation page or call the Charity team on 01254 732140 to make a donation directly.

“Local firms and individuals can also support us by donating prizes and goods that we can use to raise money. And people are also very welcome to become an ELHT&Me volunteer.

“We are encouraging people to show support for their local hospitals and help reach the £1 Million Appeal in whatever way possible. A small donation, a school or office dress-down day, a collection amongst friends or a sponsored run will do so much.”
